Zhang Wei: A Chinese Student’s Academic Journey at University of Greenwich

Zhang Wei, a Chinese student from Shenzhen, enrolled at the University of Greenwich in 2019 to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Despite initial challenges with English language proficiency and academic expectations, Zhang demonstrated exceptional dedication and resilience. He actively participated in the university’s academic support services, including the International Student Development Office’s language workshops and weekly tutoring sessions, to bridge the gap. Zhang also maintained a rigorous study schedule, balancing coursework with independent research projects in artificial intelligence.

Zhang’s efforts paid off as he consistently achieved top marks in his coursework, including a 92% average in his first year. He was particularly focused on machine learning and sustainable energy applications, areas where he excelled. During his studies, he collaborated with Professor Sarah Jones (a faculty member at the University of Greenwich’s School of Engineering) on a research project about neural networks for renewable energy optimization. This collaboration led to his first publication in a reputable journal. By the time he graduated in 2022 with a first-class honors degree, Zhang had not only mastered his academic subjects but also developed a strong foundation for future research, earning recognition from both his university and the broader academic community.
