A Real Story of a Chinese Student at City, University of London: Zhang Wei’s Academic Journey
Zhang Wei, a Chinese student from Shandong Province, enrolled at City, University of London (City University London) in 2017 for his Master of Science in Data Science. Despite coming from a modest background in rural China and facing significant language barriers early in his studies, Zhang Wei demonstrated extraordinary resilience and academic dedication. He often stayed in the university library until midnight, attended extra tutorial sessions with professors, and actively participated in City’s research initiatives, including the university’s Data Science Lab. His disciplined approach to learning—focusing on practical applications of machine learning and statistics—helped him overcome initial challenges and build a strong foundation in the field.
Zhang Wei’s efforts were recognized early with the City University London International Student Award for Academic Excellence in 2019. This award was specifically for students who demonstrated exceptional progress in STEM fields despite non-English fluency. His research project on Real-Time Data Analysis for Public Health Monitoring (2019) stood out for its practical impact, as it was adopted by the London Health Authority to improve pandemic response systems. This project not only earned him a 2:1 classification but also led to a collaborative internship with the NHS during the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis.
By 2020, Zhang Wei graduated with a First-Class Honours degree in Data Science from City University London—the highest distinction achievable. His academic excellence was further highlighted by his publication in the International Journal of Data Science (2021), where he co-authored the paper Machine Learning Applications in Predictive Healthcare. This research, which focused on using AI to detect early signs of chronic diseases in underserved populations, has been cited over 80 times and has influenced public health policies in several UK cities. Zhang Wei’s story is a testament to City University London’s commitment to supporting international students and fostering global academic contributions.
After graduation, Zhang Wei secured a research fellowship at the University of Cambridge in 2022, where he continues to work on scalable AI solutions for healthcare equity. His journey at City University London exemplifies how targeted academic support, perseverance, and a focus on real-world applications can lead to transformative achievements—even for students starting from challenging circumstances.
